Dr. Shawn VanCour will be presenting, “Redefining Cultural Memory: The Library of Congress Radio Preservation Task Force and the Changing Work of Media History and Archival Studies”.
Created in 2014 by the Library of Congress’s National Recording Preservation Board, the Radio Preservation Task Force (RPTF) works to fulfill an NRPB mandate to facilitate preservation, access, and educational use of historical radio recordings. In this talk, UCLA IS professor and RPTF executive officer Shawn VanCour addresses the RPTF’s operational goals and strategies, and explains radio’s larger importance for the nation’s audio history and cultural heritage.
Shawn VanCour is Assistant Professor of Media Archival Studies in UCLA’s Department of Information Studies. He is author of Making Radio: Early Radio Production and the Rise of Modern Sound Culture (Oxford University Press, forthcoming) and a series of articles on radio and television history, media archives, technology studies, and sound studies.
