Patricia Gándara
Professor of Education
Professor of Education Patricia Gándara’s research focuses on educational equity and access for low income and ethnic minority students, language policy, and the education of Mexican origin youth.
Along with her husband, Professor Gary Orfield, Professor Gándara is co-director of the Civil Rights |
Project/Proyecto Derechos Civiles at UCLA, a leading resource of information on racial justice. Together their work includes a number of studies on affirmative action, school segregation, the school dropout crisis, federal racial statistics, language policy, as well as several other issues including federal legislation such as No Child Left Behind (NCLB).
A former Commissioner for Post-secondary Education for the state of California, Professor Gándara has worked as a bilingual school psychologist, a Social Scientist with the RAND Corporation, and Director of education research in the California Legislature (State Assembly). Prior to joining the UCLA faculty in 2007, she was a Professor of Education at UC Davis.

Professor Gándara received her B.A. in Sociology/English Literature from the University of California, Los Angeles in 1969, an M.S. degree in Counseling/School Psychology in 1972 from California State University, and a Ph.D. in Educational Psychology from the University of California, Los Angeles in 1979.
