At GSE&IS, commitment to community is more than a concept -- it's a plan of action. GSE&IS is an engaged partner in efforts to strengthen local, national, and international communities through a wide array of education and information initiatives. Working closely with community groups in our area and around the world, GSE&IS faculty, staff, alumni, and students are forging enduring connections, influencing long-term policy, and improving countless lives through research, activism, mentoring, teaching, service, outreach, and leadership.
The following are highlights of the many projects, programs and activities at GSE&IS that are strengthening the fabric of our community:
GSE&IS Demonstration Schools:
UCLA Lab School - The innovative and progressive elementary school on the UCLA Campus that was previously known as Corinne A. Seeds University Elementary School (UES). UCLA Lab School is internationally recognized as a demonstration site for best practices in preK - 6 education. Thousands of educators from Los Angeles and around the world visit the school each year to observe classrooms in action. CONNECT is the GSE&IS research center located at the school.
UCLA Community School - A new K-12 demonstration school out in the community that opened in the Fall of 2009 and is bringing the resources of UCLA directly to one of L.A.'s most underserved neighborhoods. UCLA Community School is a UCLA-supported LAUSD Pilot School that was developed in collaboration with LAUSD Local District 4 and the Belmont Education Collaborative. Faculty at GSE&IS are helping to develop this as a world-class, innovative demonstration school. The school provides UCLA faculty with new opportunities for research in a real-world, public school setting.
