Douglas Kellner: Gun Violence Part of “Media Spectacle”

The George F. Kneller Chair in the Philosophy of Education and former Sudikoff Fellow examines the social and historical forces that give rise to random violence by males.

In a Q&A interview for UCLA Today, education professor Douglas Kellner draws from his latest book, “Media Spectacle and Insurrection 2011: From Arab Uprisings to Occupy Everywhere,” (Bloomsbury, 2012) to discuss the various factors that have contributed to an ongoing epidemic of mass shootings in the U.S. and abroad.

Kellner points to a confluence of elements that must be taken into account in order to understand such tragedies, including factors that relate to masculine identity, socio-economic influences, and in particular, mental health problems.
