Faculty Advisor, GSE&IS's Teacher Education Program

Kyndall Brown is a faculty advisor in GSE&IS's Teacher Education Program (TEP) and the Director of UCLA's Mathematics Project. His research interests focus on how identity and culture impact the ways that African-American students learn mathematics and the impact of professional development on teaching practices and student achievement.

In his current position, Brown trains and provides professional development programs for K-12 teachers of mathematics to improve the quality of mathematics instruction in low performing schools. Additionally, he hires and supervises mathematics instructional coaches who work with teachers in GSE&IS partnership schools and presents research findings at local, state, and national education conferences. He also supervises first year teachers, supports teachers in their classrooms by observing them and providing feedback, as well as assisting them with lesson planning, writes grants to help fund TEP's professional work in schools, and teaches graduate classes at GSE&IS.

He is director of "Fremont Achievement in Mathematics for Excellence (FRAME)," a grant sponsored by the California Post-Secondary Education Commission. The project aims to increase the academic achievement of students by helping improve teacher quality and ensuring that all teachers are highly qualified and effective. The grant provides intensive professional development focused on mathematics content and pedagogy, as well as classroom support to assist teachers in implementation of high-level mathematics for all students. The UCLA Mathematics Project will use findings to inform their work and share the results at local, state, and national conferences and in scholarly journals.

For the past five years, Brown has served as a Mathematics Education Consultant for the Connecting to Communities Coalition /Academic Centers of Excellence, funded through the University of California Office of the President, the Research and Policy Institute of California, and the California State University Office of the President, where he assists in developing a culturally based mathematics curriculum focused on Algebra 1 and trains secondary Algebra Institute instructors in the use of a culturally based algebra curriculum. This curriculum is used in Summer Algebra Institutes held at African-American community-based organizations and churches.

Brown began his career in education as a mathematics teacher for the Los Angeles Unified School District where he taught at the middle and high school level for over a decade. He joined GSE&IS in 1999 as Co-Director of the UCLA Mathematics Project.

He holds a BS in Mathematics from the University of California, Irvine, MAs in Computer Based Education and in Mathematics Education from California State University Dominguez Hills, and a PhD in Education from UCLA.
