GSE&IS Academic Programs Education

Department of Education

The Department of Education's research is geared toward improving learning and teaching in and out of the classroom with learners of all ages.  Both an influence and a resource, GSE&IS's Department of Education prepares students to be leaders in educational research, policy, and practice.  Working alongside educators who are prominent scholars and practitioners, students develop the knowledge, skills, values, and habits of mind needed to serve the education profession as researchers, teachers, principals, superintendents, curriculum and program developers, consultants, and collaborators, particularly in urban environments where ethnic, linguistic, and class diversity challenge traditional teaching methods and practices.  The department is internationally known as a leader in the study and practice of urban education, student testing and assessment, teacher and continuing education and development - particularly in urban, multi-ethnic environments, early childhood development, and issues of access, equity, and quality facing K-12 and higher education.

The Department of Education was ranked fifth overall in the nation according to U.S. News & World Report's 2010 report.  In addition to its overall ranking, the Department of Education ranked third in higher education administration, seventh in education policy, and ninth in educational psychology.

The Department of Education offers an undergraduate minor program, MA and PhD programs in five academic areas of emphasis, MEd programs in three professional areas, and an EdD professional program.  Whatever program students choose to pursue, they develop a broad understanding of educational theory and tested practice and of how to make a difference in the field.  The department is organized into a matrix of divisions and teaching programs.  The academic programs (MA and PhD) are administered within five divisions, with all ladder faculty belonging to a division.  The undergraduate minor and the professional programs (MEd and EdD) are administered by a combination of ladder faculty from within the divisions and professional faculty belonging to each professional program.
